Freeport to Yarmouth, a 20 Kilometre day

October 18

A rainy night did not make for a good sleep, but as the morning light came, the rain stopped.
First stop was the library that was not opened, so we sent and received outside.

Next Jane took us down to road to see Jack and Noreen, a couple that that we met on a three week River Cruise three years ago on the Danube.

Jack and Noreen live in Yarmouth, Maine, in an absolutely gorgeous large New England home that they planned and built 15 years ago. The house seems to go on forever. About six bedrooms, all tastefully decorated with accents and collections that have been gathered over the years and passed down from previous generations. [I have attached some photographs of this lovely home.]

There are several notable 'collections' tastefully incorporated throughout the house. In our bedroom, [yes, we came inside]! is a 10-shelf collection of 'lustre ware'

In other rooms are pewter, Indian wooden fish lures, table napkins, antique cast metal banks and pressed glass, to name a few. By far biggest of all however, is Noreen's seemingly endless array of pigs. Jack has been relatively unsuccessful in preventing illegal alien pigs from slipping out of their designated area into other parts of the home. Dispersed about this interesting home you will find little settlements of pigs and piglet colonies just about everywhere.

Jack and Noreen took us on a half day tour of the surrounding area and down to Portland, Maine. The city is absolutely full of history and beautiful examples of architecture starting as early as the late 1700s.

Jack has served on several boards and committees in Portland and has been involved with the museum and efforts to preserve and improve the precious past for future generations to enjoy.

They prepared a delicious dinner for us as we caught up with each others recent adventures and future plans. Jack had gone to the trouble of getting books, maps and advice for us to take advantage of the sights and history so close to us here. I did not realise how fast we can get around on the turnpikes here. We are just three to four long days away from Atlanta, that is our general destination after leaving here. We have some revised planning to do considering new information and projected travel times.

The sleep in these large comfortable New England beds sure are conducive to uninterrupted sleep. They are so high I got altitude sickness as I climbed in last night!
